Meredith Kiernan, St. Petersburg

The senior shot 2over 73 to win the girls division of the Green Devil Invitational on Thursday afternoon at the Vinoy Golf Club. She was 1 under on the back nine and 3 over on the front nine.

'I putted really well, but I did make a double (bogey),' Kiernan said. 'But it was a good round. It was consistent.' Kiernan said she did not head into the high school season with a head of steam. She played in Florida State Golf Association junior events throughout the summer but did not have many low rounds.

'I played so badly this summer,' she said. 'I did have a couple of moments. The last tournament I played before school I finished fifth, which isn't bad for an FSGA tournament. But I've been playing really well this high school season.' Kiernan is a regular at the Vinoy and St. Petersburg Country Club. She hopes to continue to play in college. In November she will visit Loyola University Chicago.

But there is still some unfinished business for her high school career. The district tournament starts next week. St. Petersburg had only three players at the Vinoy tournament, which is not enough to qualify as a team.

Kiernan would like to qualify as an individual at state. That would mean making it through the district and region tournaments.

'I didn't make states last year so I want to get there really, really bad this year,' she said. 'I played really bad at regionals (last season). We got rained out the first day and I just tanked it the next day. It was a mess. Hopefully it will be different this time.'
